The combination of the days getting shorter, colder temperatures setting in and a couple incredible deals hitting the inbox has me thinking back to the summer and our trip to Tuscany.
One afternoon we had lunch at Osteria Le Panzanelle, just a short drive from Panzano where Castello di Rampolla is located. It was one of those perfect Italian meals - simple, but done to perfection: pappardelle cinghiale, pici all'aglione and the daily special lasagne alla casa.
When it came to choosing the wine, we followed the old "what grows together, goes together" adage. Rampolla was just down the road, 2019 was an epic vintage in Tuscany, and the Sammarco was reasonably priced. We had found ourselves a winner.
And what a treat it was - concentrated with dark red fruit and firm tannic structure from the Cabernet that paired exceptionally well with our rich pasta dishes. It was one of the vinous highlights of our trip - which is saying something considering how many different wines we tasted over the fortnight.
When a keenly-priced parcel of this wine was offered to me recently, I didn't hesitate to jump on it. And now that it has landed in London City Bond, I'm excited to offer it to you all.
We also spent a morning at Casanova de Neri. We were shown around and given the opportunity to taste through their range from the Rosso all the way to the renowned Cerretalto. From top to bottom, these are clearly some of the best wines being made in Montalcino. And as a friend said recently, "affordable halves with age are worth their weight in gold". So, similar to the Sammarco, when the opportunity arose to acquire a few cases of Rosso halves from 2016 (an even greater vintage than 2019?), at an excellent price, I had to take them.
I hope these wines bring a bit of sunshine to your autumnal days. After all - and at the risk of repeating a cliche - the great Tuscan Galileo is credited with the quote: "Il vino è un composto d’umore e di luce" or "Wine is sunshine, held together by water."
