Why taste one when you can taste six?

When I sent out the PVG offer last week, the response was mixed - some excitement, but also hesitation. That’s not surprising: not many people have firsthand experience with Pierre’s wines, and he has become notorious for not allowing critics to visit or score them. A number of you even asked how I managed to secure such pricing. The honest answer? Scores (high ones, in particular) sell wines and as a result these wines can be a tricky to pitch to consumers. As a result many in the trade shy away from them for exactly that reason.

But here’s the thing: Girardin refuses critics because he believes his wines speak for themselves - and once you’ve tasted them, you’ll see why. My Danish friends at Rare Wine explain his philosophy well below:

Now I’m at a fork in the road. I could flip these back onto an exchange or another merchant and let someone else worry about placing them. Or, I can stick with the mission of Avint-Garde: securing world-class wines at sharp pricing and putting them directly in your hands. I prefer the latter.

So here’s what I’m doing: offering six mixed cases of Pierre Girardin, duty-paid and ready for delivery, each with one 750ml bottle of the following:

To put it another way using wine math: a bottle of Corton-Charlemagne and Clos de Vougeot less than £125/bottle duty-paid is outstanding value (and no, don’t go applying that average to the village wines).
