Yes, really.

Monthelie - serious terroir, refreshingly sensible pricing

First off, thank you to everyone who jumped on the Egon Müller offer. It sold out in record time, which probably tells me I’m pricing things too low. But that’s the point, isn’t it?
Avint-Garde also marked its first anniversary last week. It’s been equal parts challenging and rewarding, and we’re just getting started. A genuine thank you for the support, whether that’s buying, sharing, or simply following along. Onwards and upwards.
Which brings us to this week’s offer. If Müller sat firmly in the collectible camp, this is the opposite end of the spectrum. A bottle you’re happy to open midweek. Something that stops you reaching for the “special occasion” stash. In other words, a cellar defender.
Typically, that category is filled by safe, industrial wines from supermarkets or big chains. They do a job, but they’re not why most of us got into wine. And they rarely come from places like Burgundy.
Which is what makes this interesting.
Not only is this Burgundy, it’s Premier Cru. Roughly 18% of Burgundy production sits at this level, coming from better-sited vineyards that tend to receive more careful farming and handling. In short, this is where things usually start getting expensive.
Monthelie sits quietly between Volnay and Meursault, often overlooked despite sharing the same limestone spine that defines both villages. Les Vignes Rondes shows exactly why that matters. Thin soils, excellent exposure, and a natural tendency to ripen cleanly. This is about precision and lift rather than weight.
Domaine Dujardin is a name worth knowing here. Ulrich Dujardin built the estate around structure and site expression. Now, with Paul and Margaux taking over, the style is evolving. There is a lighter touch in the cellar, more focus on clarity, and wines that speak earlier without losing their backbone. Jasper Morris has described their wines as "precise and fine".
The 2019 vintage adds another layer. Warm, low-yielding, and concentrated, but still balanced. You get proper Premier Cru structure with a level of approachability that makes it genuinely useful. Drink it now, or let it sit. Either works.
I had twelve six-packs when these went up earlier in the week. A few of you found them already, so there are nine left at the time of writing.
