Happy first day of meteorological Spring!
Time to ease off the Claret and Châteauneuf and reach for something with a little more lift and energy. Pinot season is officially upon us. Although, for some of us, it never really left.
Today’s wine is one I was delighted to lock in at a frankly absurd price - and I’ve been eagerly waiting for it to land in my warehouse. It finally did last week. In fact, a few of you eagle-eyed customers have already snatched up a couple cases.
This is serious Pinot from a singular terroir, with real pedigree behind it. Transparent, precise and compelling.
And it happens to be offered at 30% below the next best in-stock UK price.
Which means you can open it at a picnic, pour it at a BBQ (soon enough!), or slip it into a blind tasting without it feeling out of place next to bottles from the Sonoma Coast or the Côte d’Or.

So without further ado...

What is left to accomplish in Italy when you come from the Incisa della Rocchetta family? Rather than living under the shadow of the legendary Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Piero Incisa della Rocchetta struck out in an unexpected direction. Being the grandson of the founder of Sassicaia has its perks, and before long Piero was established in the southerly reaches of Argentina's fertile Rio Negro Valley. Geographical distance wasn't enough, either. At the winery he established - Bodega Chacra - you'll find no Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, or Sangiovese, the calling cards of his winemaking family. Piero's was laser-focused on two varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
A "Chacra" refers to a plot of land dedicated to fruit cultivation in Argentina. Piero set his intention from the beginning - a wholistic, farming-first winery without a cut corner in sight. Biodynamics are just the beginning here, where every possible pain is endured to make each vineyard into a strong, self-sustaining ecosystem.
"Cincuenta y Cinco" is made from vines planted in 1955 in stony, well-drained soils. Its whole-cluster fermentation at low temperatures fits the vineyard sites well, and makes for a structured, vibrant expression of Pinot Noir that tends to be one of the winery's longest-lived in the cellar. After fermentation, the wine is raised in a mixture of concrete (55%), used French oak (41%, including some second-use that imparts a subtle new-oak edge), and amphorae (4%).
It's now 20 years into the Chacra experiment. If you have yet to experience the heights of Patagonian Pinot Noir, it's about time you find out what you're missing!
