Historic vineyard. Serious vintage. Avint-Garde pricing.
Hello Wine Friends!

If you’re reading this from London, I hope you and your wine have survived the heatwave.

I know, I know, I know. When I launched Avint-Garde, I said I wanted to do things a little differently from the incumbents. If yours is anything like mine, your inbox was full of offers like the below marking the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris.

Is it Judgment or Judgement?
But this week's offer is too good for me to sit on. So here I am sending out a Judgment of Paris offer just like the rest of 'em.

For the uninitiated, on May 24th, 1976, British wine merchant Steven Spurrier staged a blind tasting in Paris. The expectation was that France’s finest - think Mouton Rothschild and Haut-Brion - would comfortably see off California’s ambitious upstarts. Instead, the American wines shocked the room, taking top honors in both the red and white categories. It was the tasting that announced Napa Valley on the world stage.

For anyone who wants the full story, George Taber’s Judgment of Paris: California vs. France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting That Revolutionized Wine is well worth a read. Taber was then a journalist for Time Magazine and, crucially, the only member of the press in the room.

Which brings us to today’s offer.

The red wine that came out on top at the tasting was the 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, if only I could offer you that bottle, dear reader. It is now such an important piece of wine history that it sits in the collection of the Smithsonian.

But what I can offer is the modern successor to that same historic bottling, from the same address, with five decades of learning, refinement and polish behind it.

After the catastrophic fires of 2020, the 2021 vintage marked a welcome return to form, with Napa Valley Vintners summing it up with two simple words: "pure joy."

You could pick up three bottles at Harrods for £825, and you probably wouldn’t even get the original wooden case. But if you're reading this, it's safe to assume you're not looking to pay Knightsbridge department-store prices for your wine.

Some of the competition are offering this between £470 at Lay & Wheeler Trading and £599 at Jeroboams, which, to be fair, is not outrageous for a wine of this quality from a producer of this significance.

But this is Avint-Garde. We can do better.

So, while the wine world looks back on the tasting that changed the game, we’re pleased to offer you the chance to add a little Napa history to your cellar, without paying Knightsbridge prices.
White-Glove Concierge Delivery and Free In-Bond Transfers

This week's concierge deliveries will take place on Thursday, or if you are happy to wait a week I'll see you on next week's run. As a result the timeline for ordering is 10am on Wednesday. As always, if you need it faster, select nationwide delivery at checkout and these orders will be processed normally.

For anything you want to lay down safely in bond, our usual UK warehouse transfer service is available at no cost and I've got a couple transfers just about to go out the door to the major warehouses, so act quickly and you won't be waiting too long.

Cheers, y’all!
