Buongiorno amici! Let's cut straight to the chase.
|
For even casual fans of Italian reds today’s offer is a no-brainer. I won’t dabble in the Nebbiolo vs. Sangiovese debate as to which variety most epitomizes Italian wine (Merlot might also like a word, and if you’re looking for Masseto, I’m happy to hunt some down for you). But I think it’s safe to say Sangiovese is synonymous with Tuscany and in the right hands, Brunello di Montalcino is the epitome of this grape.
|
One of the great things about Brunello (of which there are many) is that in order to fall within the appellation, producers are mandated to age their wines for at least two years in oak and cannot be released until January of the fifth year after harvest, so you’re already getting a wine that’s closer to being ready to drink than similarly structured wines from other regions.

Similar to Rioja, the consortium of Brunello producers (Consorzio del vino Brunello di Montalcino) has meticulously rated every vintage in Montalcino going back to 1945 using a five star system. This can be helpful for you as a buyer when assessing whether to load up on one year versus another. Lucky for you, dear readers, 2020 has been rated five stars along with epic vintages like 2010, 2016, and 2019.

Each year, the Consorzio del vino Brunello di Montalcino commemorates the previous vintage with a tile on their town hall. The 2020 tile was created by Italian Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Federica Pellegrini, and reads "With every harvest, the rebirth of a myth"

I was texting recently with a well-connected friend in the region who told me a number of producers consider 2020 to be superior to 2019, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest vintages this century.

Needless to say, when I was offered cases of what Audrey Frick (writing for JebDunnuck.com) described as “certainly one of the highlights of the 2020 vintage”, I took as many as I could. For you all, of course.
|
Now I'm proud to offer just ten cases. Borrowing Audrey Frick's words again, it's "very pretty…light on its feet while delivering wonderful energy and freshness", and at £75/case below its UK release price (Asset Wines) it's the best way I know into the 2020 vintage.

|
This is drinking well now and has potential to age for the next decade or more.

"Very pretty...it's light on its feet while delivering wonderful energy and freshness, with snappy ripe red fruit, a refreshing, angular feel, and mouthwatering saline and acidity. This is certainly one of the highlights of the 2020 vintage. Drink 2025-2040."
