Flying Under The Radar In Burgundy
Hi friends and happy Mother's Day for anyone celebrating in the UK. If you're cooking for mum at home, I hope you're treating her to some nice bottles. And if you braving the brunching crowds, I trust that you upgraded that complimentary glass or prosecco to something proper.
We've also had quite a few sign-ups to our list over the past fortnight, so if it's your first time getting one of these offers - welcome.
The response to the Chacra offer was incredibly well received (oversubscribed), so thank you for the support. Our trusty concierge has delivered all the duty paid cases by now and the bonded transfers are making their way to your respective warehouses.
If you ordered one of our Christmas mixed cases or are a Burgundy afficiando, you may already be familiar with today's producer. Otherwise, I hope these are an introduction to an address that's making high quality wines without all the buzz and tight allocations that we've come to associate with the region.
The best part about these wines are from favorable vintages (2015 - warm and genrous/ 2017 - classical and balanced) that are in their early drinking windows so are ready to be opened as soon as this weekend.

So without further ado...

Until recently it was rare to spot wines from Coquard Loison Fleurot outside of the French market. Despite enviable holdings (the domaine holds no less than six Grand Crus, mostly venerable old vines planted between 1920 and 1960), "CLF" largely remained an insider secret until the arrival of star winemaker Thomas Colladot in 2010.
Colladot is part of what one might call Burgundy's young winemaker inner circle, closely tied to young hotshots like Charles Lachaux and Sébastien Cathiard. The group shares winemaking techniques, yes, but more importantly they have a shared vision of wine as an agricultural product that can be no better than the vineyards in which it is born.
CLF is no stranger to grape cultivation, with nine carefully-managed hectares that are now jointly shepherded by Colladot and commercial director Claire Fleurot. Grapes sold to négociants, common before Colladot's arrival, have now mostly returned to domaine production, and the old-vine material is turning out stunning wines under his practiced hand.
For fans of Cathiard or Mugneret-Gibourg, the CLF wines are outrageous values, and echo the blend of richness, balance, and site-specificity at those addresses that is so difficult to replicate, and tends to balloon prices once the word gets out. Get your hands on some while you can!
