Producer Spotlight: Pierre-Vincent Girardin

13th-Generation Burgundy Wunderkind

Hi Wine Friends -

First, a big thank you for the support on the last offer. Demand for the Benjamin Leroux Saint-Romain and Pol Roger was among some of the strongest we've seen since launching. While the 2020 Saint-Romain sold out, there are a handful of cases of the 2021 still available here.

One of the fun things about this project is learning what works, what doesn't and fine tuning the approach accordingly. That being said, I'm already scouring my sources for sharp white Burgundy and bubbles for you, my dear clients.

Speaking of Burgundy...

To date we've taken a regional approach to the offers with a couple mixed bags thrown in. This week, we're zooming in on a single producer to both inform and showcase a range of wines coming out of the same address.

The recent history of Burgundy has been the changing of the guard. There's no definitive start of this current generation starting taking over, but at iconic domaines like Dujac (Domaine DU JACques - after the first generation, Jacques Seyesses), Arnoux-Lachaux, and Vincent Dancer the younger generation taking the reigns has sparked renewed interest in and demand for the wines. The list of dynamic new proprietors is long, but today's featured producer is perhaps the most exciting of all: Pierre-Vincent Girardin, or PVG for short.

Based in Meursault, Domaine Vincent Girardin may be known to some of our readers, but less known is the fact that Vincent decided to sell the domaine in 2011 to a conglomerate and is no longer in his hands despite his name remaining on the label. A few choice parcels (like the legendary village section of Folatières in Puligny) were held back from the sale and given to Vincent's son Pierre to serve as the founding vineyards of his new, eponymous domaine.

Starting in 2017, Pierre has released some of the most confident and distinctive wines that ever a young winemaker produced (he was only 21 years of age in his first vintage). In the words of Steen Öhmann from Winehog: "Expressing terroir is not easy, but producers like Roulot really excel in bringing out the individual character of the village terroirs – showing how different they are – and what they can offer in terms of enjoyment and pairing with food. To find a 21-year-old vigneron with the same ambitions – and the talent to match – is rare indeed."

The plaudits and praise has been nearly universal with Decanter profiling PVG as one of the top-10 young talents in Burgundy, and William Kelley stating that "few emerging Côte de Beaune winemakers are making more of a stir than 21-year-old Pierre Vincent Girardin". And it wasn't just the press just doing the talking - the wine trade voted with their wallets, causing PVG to be the single biggest riser in the Liv-ex Power 100 in 2022, going from the 297th most traded producer on the platform in 2021, to the 53rd in 2022 - and subsequently jumping to the 17th in 2023. Simply put, PVG's ascendancy has been remarkable.

Avint-Garde is proud to have been able to source the wines below and offer them at the best prices globally.
